Reading

W.A.L.T ask and answer questions.

This week I have been reading a story called Te Tiriti O Waitangi. This book is about Waitangi Day. It talks about who arrived in NZ and when. Captain Cook was the first person to put NZ on the map but the Maori's actually arrived first. Europeans came to NZ to hunt seals and whales. The treaty come about to stop the fighting between the Pakeha and the Maori. However, the treaty caused concern because the English and Maori version were different. The chiefs were concerned and worried. The treaty did manage to stop some of the fighting but not all of it.
Now the Treaty is celebrate and recognised by Waitangi Day which is a national holiday in NZ.
